At Sutton-on-Sea Community Primary School, we believe that every child can make progress, whatever their starting point.  We carefully assess and review how well pupils with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND) are achieving their individual outcomes both academically and personally in the following ways:

• The Graduated Approach – pupils with SEND have learning or pastoral plans and progress towards meeting the targets set is reviewed at least termly by Class Teachers.  The SENDCO and parents/carers are informed and consulted about next steps.  All targets set are SMART and informed by up to date data/assessment outcomes.  This process helps us to ensure that support is appropriate, effective ad regularly updated to meet the needs of each child.

 

• A range of assessments are used in our school to baseline and track progress for pupils with SEND including:

Academic assessments (eg. Reading, writing, maths).

Language assessments such as Wellcomm

Small-step progress through objectives assessments and individual targets

Social, emotional or behavioural assessments through reviewing pastoral plans or assessments such as the Boxhall Profile.

Use of the V-Send tool – identify strengths and specific areas of weakness for individuals.

Assessments/screening carried out by the Specialist Teaching Team

Information from assessments carried out by external professionals.

Observations from teachers, parents and specialists.

We record and track progress using Insight, our whole school assessment system.  Outcomes of assessments also inform individual pastoral and learning plans and pupil on a page documents, all of which are updated termly. This ensures that outcomes and progress are closely monitored and that interventions have an impact.

We believe that progress happens best when school home and the pupil work closely together and all are kept informed through:

• Termly review meetings
• Progress reports
• Formal and informal updates
• Opportunities at every review to gather everyone’s views.

All SEND paperwork provides an opportunity to record strengths as well as identified needs.  This approach ensures that every pupil’s achievements are celebrated and any barriers quickly addressed.
