Parents and Carers

At Sutton-on-Sea Community Primary School, we believe that parents and carers know their children best.  We value working in partnership to ensure that every child with SEND receives the right support to thrive.

We aim to build positive, open and honest relationships with all families.  We make sure that parents and carers are involved at every stage of identifying, planning and reviewing support for their child.

How We Work Together

  • Early Conversations – when a concern is first identified, the Clas Teacher will talk to parents to share observations and listen to their views.
  • Regular Meetings – parents of pupils with SEND are invited to meet termly with the Class Teacher and/or SENDCO to review progress, set new targets and discuss support strategies.
  • Review Meetings for children with EHCPs (Education Health Care Plans) – for children with an EHCP, parents are fully involved with the annual review and any additional review meetings (at least 1 per term).
  • Informal Contact – parents are welcome to talk to staff at any time by arranging a meeting, phoning or emailing the school office.
  • Parent Workshops and Drop-ins- the SENDCO offers opportunities for parents to learn more about how we support different needs and also how they can help at home.
  • Recording Parent Voice – all SEND paperwork is designed to record parental voice at each stage of the process.
  • Documentation – parents are welcome to have copies of any SEND paperwork for their children either in electronic or paper versions.

We make decisions about support with families, not for them.  Parents’ insights about their child’s needs, interests and personality are central to shaping provision.  We also encourage parents to share what works well at home so we can build consistent approaches across school and home life.

Parental Concerns

At Sutton on Sea Community Primary School, we value strong partnerships with parents and carers. If you have any concerns about your child’s progress, learning, or the support they receive, please follow the steps below:

  1. Class Teacher
    • Your child’s class teacher should always be your first point of contact.
    • They know your child best and can discuss their progress, support in place, and any day-to-day issues.
  2. Special Educational Needs and Disabilities Coordinator (SENDCo)
    • If you wish to discuss your child’s special educational needs in more detail, please contact the SENDCo, who oversees all SEND provision in school and ensures that appropriate support is in place.

  3. Headteacher
    • If your concerns remain unresolved after speaking with the class teacher or SENDCo, please contact the Headteacher, who has overall responsibility for the education and welfare of all pupils.

Parental Complaints

If a parent or carer has a concern about SEND provision for their child and they have already followed the steps above to discuss this informally, the next step will be to make a formal complaint.

To do this, parents and carers should follow the school’s complaints procedure.  A copy of this is available on the policies page of the school website or a paper copy can be requested from the school office.
