At Sutton on Sea Community Primary School, we recognise that children who are Looked After by the Local Authority (LAC) may have additional needs, including special educational needs and/or disabilities (SEND). We are committed to ensuring that all looked-after children receive the same opportunities to thrive, achieve, and feel supported as their peers.

Our Approach

We understand that children in care may experience social, emotional, or educational challenges, and we take a joined-up approach to support them through both our SEND and Pastoral systems.

Key Arrangements

• The school’s Designated Teacher for Looked-After Children works closely with the SENDCo to ensure that all educational, emotional, and social needs are met.
• Each looked-after child with SEND has a Personal Education Plan (PEP), which is reviewed regularly alongside their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP) or SEND Support Plan.
• The SENDCo ensures that appropriate support and interventions are in place, and that progress is carefully monitored.
• The Designated Teacher, SENDCo, and Social Worker communicate regularly to coordinate support and share information.
• Staff receive training on attachment, trauma, and social–emotional needs to help them understand and respond effectively.
• The school works in partnership with the Virtual School for Looked-After Children, the Local Authority SEND team, and other relevant professionals to ensure the best outcomes for each pupil.
