P.E Curriculum Statement
A high-quality physical education curriculum inspires all pupils to succeed and excel in competitive sport and other physically-demanding activities. It should provide opportunities for pupils to become physically confident in a way which supports their health and fitness. Opportunities to compete in sport and other activities build character and help to embed values such as fairness and respect.
At Sutton-on-Sea Community Primary School, we recognise the values that a high-quality Physical Education (P .E) and school sports curriculum gives pupils. We want to nurture personal talents, discover new ones and encourage everyone to be the best they can be.
We work closely with Pivotal Skills Ltd. They help deliver staff CPD, introduce our children to unusual sports, offer enrichment activities and run clubs at lunch and after school.
We value the benefits of PE and sport to build children’s self-confidence, esteem, self-worth and resilience, which is character-building and essential for our pupil’s development.
Intent:
At Sutton-on-Sea Community Primary school our aim is to inspire all children to develop a love of physical activity and sport. Through good physical education, whole school values and a whole child approach, we aim to nurture confident, resilient children who will strive for their personal best. We want to aid our children in obtaining the values and skills to celebrate and respect the success of others, as well as modestly celebrating their own successes. We aim to ensure that our delivery of physical education allows all children to have the skills and mindset to leave primary school with the capabilities to be successful in their sporting challenges and have active lifestyles. We are dedicated to ensuring healthy minds, as well as bodies and support our children's well-being.
Implementation:
Our curriculum has been designed to ensure that all pupils make progress towards achieving the desired end points set out in the national curriculum by the end of key stage 2. They will do this through acquiring the substantive and disciplinary knowledge which has been broken down into coherently sequenced component parts. When the pupils acquire the knowledge required to be successful against each component, this learning will then be built on sequentially to ensure that each small step leads to all pupils attaining the desired end point (composite). Our PE progression documents set out the sequence of learning. The curriculum has been designed with the concept of memory in mind. Our curriculum is designed to ensure the children know and remember more by incorporating a ‘spiralised’ curriculum where concepts are revisited to facilitate learning being transferred into the long-term memory. Concepts are consistently revisited and regularly reviewed with retrieval practice being central to our curriculum. Content and concepts are revisited and built upon throughout academic years and year groups. Children in Year 4 will swim once a week with the intent that they reach national standards by the end of the year.
Impact:
We help motivate children to participate in a variety of sports through quality teaching that is engaging and fun. From our lessons, our children learn to take responsibility for their own health and fitness, many of whom also enjoy the success of competitive sports. We equip our children with the necessary skills and a love for sport. They will hopefully grow up to live happy and healthy lives utilising the skills and knowledge acquired through PE.
