Art and Design Intent Statement
Art, craft and design embody some of the highest forms of human creativity. A high-quality art and design education should engage, inspire and challenge pupils, equipping them with the knowledge and skills to experiment, invent and create their own works of art, craft and design. As pupils progress, they should be able to think critically and develop a more rigorous understanding of art and design. They should also know how art and design both reflect and shape our history, and contribute to the culture, creativity and wealth of our nation. – The National Curriculum
Intent:
At Sutton-on-Sea Community Primary School, our Art and Design curriculum intent is to inspire creativity and give our pupils the confidence to experiment.
Our curriculum ensures children across all year groups are exposed to a range of artists and artistic styles from different cultures, enabling them to make decisions about their own art and refine their skills.
By the time our children leave our school at the end of KS2 our intention is that all pupils:
- Have begun to develop their own individual artistic styles which they are enthusiastic to explore further as they move into KS3.
- Will readily take risks in their learning to support the development of their own artistic styles.
- Are able to use correct vocabulary to
- Know how to evaluate their work and, considering what has and has not been successful in their artwork and how they will challenge themselves further.
- Be able to produce written and verbal reflections of art pieces they are exposed to and their own work.
Implementation:
Our intent is delivered through lessons planned in accordance with the progression of skills in Art and Design and key knowledge as per the National Curriculum.
- Creative, design, evaluative and analytical skills are present in the curriculum across the year groups.
- Key knowledge and skills are revisited and built upon as the children progress through school. Children learn about different artists, study their work, learn the necessary skills to emulate aspects of artists’ work before creating their own pieces.
- Children give respect and constructive feedback to each other as well as receiving feedback from teachers.
- Children evaluate their own work, all of which aids progression and development in future work.
Impact:
By the time our pupils leave us at the end of KS2, they will:
- have begun developing their own artistic style which they will further develop in KS3
- have developed a love of art and keen interest in exploring different artistic styles which in turn influence their own work
- have a growing artistic vocabulary which they can use to express thoughts and feelings about different artworks
- be able to critique their own work and that of others, giving thoughts and suggestions respectfully
- be able to select and use a range of artistic materials to create artworks, giving justifications for the materials they have chosen
- have an awareness of how different materials can impact upon the effect an artwork has on the audience.
